Over two days of action-packed engagement and critical problem-solving underscored the third annual and the first offline THIS Model United Nations (THISMUN) conference from 17th to 19 March. Close to 80 students attended the offline conference from Tsinghua University High School, Tsinglan School, Tsinglan School, Tsinghua Daxing High School, Canadian International School of Beijing, Beijing World Youth Academy, Beijing Keystone Academy, RDFZ Chaoyang Branch, Beijing 101 Middle School, the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, and THIS. The theme was “Universalizing Values in the Face of Individualism.” The delegates had heated discussions and engaged in negotiations leading to the consensus that modeled the procedures and protocols of the United Nations with two committees – the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
Universalizing Values in the Face of Individualism
At THISMUN, individualism refers to French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville’s idea that individualists worry only about their friends and families, not society. With this theme, both committees of THISMUN – CSW and WHO – aim to prod countries into agreeing on such common values as protecting women’s rights in the informal sector and establishing tobacco control within states. In so doing, THISMUN strived to body forth the United Nation’s purpose of achieving “international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.”

Established in 2009, THIS-MUN is a student-led club, and one of the oldest clubs at the school. It is dedicated to developing students’ perspectives on various international affairs, stimulating their professional writing potential, and practicing their leadership skills. During the weekly club sessions, students are exposed to global challenges, such as peace and security, poverty and development, human rights, environment, public health, globalization and other topics, aiming to guide students to understand, think and discuss the issues with an international perspective.
For more than 10 years, members of THIS-MUN have been active in many conferences, demonstrating eloquence in debates, and leadership when working with students from other schools, and integrating and applying the historical, political, and cultural knowledge they have learned at school to their speeches. Also, they demonstrate a full understanding of the various conference topics and global issues, showcasing their rich knowledge base and a solid cultural background. With these qualities, THIS students have won many awards and, more importantly, their understanding of global affairs has been deepened.
THIS has always encouraged students to develop a variety of club activities on their own, and has continued to provide them with a field for independent development and empowerment. In the future, we hope they can stand on the international stage of a variety of fields to actively demonstrate Chinese cultural heritage, tell the Chinese story, and grow confidently into international talents with “Chinese roots and international vision”.
