THIS Curriculum Afternoon
On September 13th, THIS hosted its annual Curriculum Afternoon for the 2021-2022 academic school year. Parents, in the bright sunshine, began entering the campus at two o’clock in the afternoon. Principal Ms. LI Wenping, the Executive Principal of THIS, and Dr. Reid Prichett, the Academic Principal, warmly welcomed the parents at the door. Several students were scattered around the building not only to help guide our parents to the classrooms, but also student club representatives were selling student-designed products as part of their fund raising efforts for the school year.
For Curriculum Afternoon, the primary portion included an overview of the primary division followed by grade level and specialist overviews. Secondary parents were invited to the homeroom community building meetings followed by teacher presentations. The content of the curriculum afternoon was substantial and compact. Both primary and secondary teachers gave wonderful and distinctive presentations introducing themselves to the parents as well as explaining course and grade level design.
Ms. Britni Padilla
“The event highlights important aspects of the Primary program such as Reading and Writing Project® and Responsive Classroom®. The presentation emphasized the parent and school connection as the heart of student achievement. By sharing with our parents about the school’s philosophy and classroom practices, they are able to gain a deeper understanding of their child’s educational experience. Parents also learned about the counseling program, our English language support model, and how the library can be a tool for their child’s success.”
Grade 2 Homeroom Teacher
Ms. Sian Li
During our curriculum afternoon, parents received an overview of what to expect in 2nd grade. Different topics within the various subject areas were presented as well as the new and exciting opportunities available in 2nd grade such as field trips and team projects. Parents got a sense on what their students will learn and how they will grow in this 2nd grade year.
Primary Chinese Teacher
黄平 Ms. Ping Huang
Key points of the Chinese class for the first and second grades throughout the school year were introduced and a brief introduction was given regarding the teaching materials, course content, homework, and recommended reading lists. This gave parents a preliminary understanding of their children’s Chinese learning in the lower grade level. Chinese learning takes the cooperation between parents and school to help children embrace their journey of exploring Chinese culture and knowledge.
The afternoon in the secondary division started with a special session for grade 6 and new parents about Powerschool, the school’s student information system. The IT team gave hands-on training so parents may familiarize themselves with this online platform. Our new parents learned how to access their accounts so they may monitor their children’s academic progress throughout the school year.
Afterwards, the parents went to their children’s homeroom classes and had wonderful meetings with the homeroom teachers. Parents learned about the goals of the homeroom and spent time building relationships with other parents in the homeroom. The homeroom teachers organized various activities for parents to present their homeroom teaching philosophy, to engage in community building, and to guide parents about their parent-child communication, and to improve cooperation between school and family.
Grade 6 Homeroom Teacher
张超然 Ms. Chaoran Zhang
In our homeroom meeting, I explained my educational philosophy and the current personality traits of the sixth graders. I focused on introducing relevant regulations closely related to students in the school. The recently nominated parent representative for our homeroom was also introduced themselves to the class parents. Finally, the meeting ended with parents writing their encouragement and expectations for their children on greeting cards. I believe that real education is a process of natural interaction, like a breeze of spring air. I am committed to accompany my children all the way through their growth and wait for them to spread their wings and fly.
Grade 8 Homeroom Teacher
Mr. Paul Moon
I’m excited to be the homeroom teacher for 8 Purple this year. 8P is a great group of students that I had the pleasure of working with last year, as their STEAM teacher. I was also able to meet several 8P parents in person during curriculum afternoon, and share with them our goals for this year. As we get ready for Sports Day, and so many other THIS events, I look forward to working, and building strong relationships, with the students and parents of 8P.
The highlight of this event was the teacher introductions and presentations which were carefully prepared by the THIS teachers of different departments of each grade. Teachers of each subject in each grade took turns speaking with the parents. Through the presentations, parents learned about the teachers’ backgrounds, educational experiences, teaching philosophies, and personalities. The teachers also focused on, the subject goals, content, and teaching methods. Parents got a glimpse of what their children experience as students in the classroom, and they had the chance to fully immersed themselves in the charm of the class and the charisma of the teachers. The teachers were received with applause and laughter from parents. The parents left the sessions feeling confident about THIS teaching and expressed a high degree of appreciation for our teachers.
The 2021 THIS Curriculum Afternoon ended as the sun was setting. Parents departed the school with full harvest and joy. This academic year, under the leadership of Principal Ms. LI Wenping, THIS will continue to maintain high academic standards, continue to develop deeper in our core values, and carry on keeping our main focus on students to empower their growth!
