Last week, THIS teachers designed the Hour of Code week for students cross different grade level to learn about computer science. There are three wonderful activities arranged for both FZ campus and DL campus:Lenovo Field Trip, Robotic Programming and Introducing Kids to Computer Programming.

Computer Science Education Week is an annual celebration dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. Originally conceived by Computing in the Core coalition, Code.org organizes CSEd Week as a grassroots campaign supported by 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.


Hour of Code




The Hour of Code (HOC) started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Coding activities aren’t just a fit for math and computer science; they can also be a part of lessons and projects in Chinese, English, social studies, science, art, and beyond. Students at the elementary, secondary level, or even in kindergarten, can benefit from opportunities to practice computational thinking. Furthermore, the HOC event engages teachers, in experimenting with programming and game creation.

This year 2020, more than 350 students in THIS and beyond learned an hour of code from THIS instructors.


Lenovo Field Trip

As an activity of Hour of Code, there is a field trip to Lenovo Shangdi Information Industry Base/Beijing. This is a great chance for THIS students to Learning about computer science in a real-world environment which can really spark students’ imaginations and reveal the dynamics of careers in the computer and technology field as well as help them build connections between technology and academics subjects.


Introducing Kids to Computer Programming

Understanding computers and learning the basics of coding helps children to develop an appreciation of how things work. Learning to code gives children the chance to learn this type of skill while they are young and it can help them along the way in life. This is one of the big reasons coding is important to learn.

Scratch is a block-based visual programming language and online community targeted primarily at children. Students can create online projects using a block-like interface. The service is developed by the MIT Media Lab.


Why CS?



The computer and technology department @ THIS believes that every student at THIS should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

This is also in line with the core values of “Discovery” of THIS: Pursuing ideas and topics that pique our curiosity, and developing creative responses to challenges and opportunities.
