THIS Physical Education – Chinese Martial Art Program
Since its establishment in 1915, Tsinghua University High School has been adhering to the school motto of “Self-improvement and Virtue”, as well as the spirit of “Actions speak louder than words” and “No sports, no Tsinghua”. As a result, the school has fostered a large number of excellent sports talents.
On July 24, 2021, the first day of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the young Chinese athlete from John Ma’s Class at Tsinghua University High School, Yang Qian, won the championship in the women’s 10-meter air rifle competition, earning the first gold for the Chinese delegation. Encouraged by this exciting accomplishment, Tsinghua University High School celebrated its 106th anniversary with the theme of “Integrating Sports and Education for the Comprehensive Development”. With the celebration, the school summarized its past achievements and experiences consolidating its collective wisdom to write a new chapter for fostering talents.
Located in Tsinghua University High School, and as an international school, THIS has always combined Eastern and Western cultures with its mission to “foster international talents who have roots in China”. THIS Principal, Ms. Li Wenping has placed emphasis on the integration of east and west both in curriculum and culture. She has led THIS to become the top international school of Chinese education, including Chinese history education and Eastern Arts. Three years ago, Principal Li incorporated Chinese martial arts into the curriculum, and it was enthusiastically received by students and parents.
“No sports, no Tsinghua”, THIS has always been committed to the concept of the general integration of sports and education interweaving the essence of sports into social and cultural functions.
The THIS PE curriculum not only cultivates students’ skills in various sports activities, physical fitness, it also introduces many students to “Chinese Kung Fu” – martial arts, the most ancient and mysterious traditional Chinese sport. The martial arts program runs from elementary school to high school. Students learn about the wonders of “Chinese Kung Fu” and the charm of traditional Chinese culture and gain a true sense of the breadth and depth of Chinese civilization.
Ms. Li Dan is a professional martial arts teacher who is now in her third year of teaching at THIS. Having practiced martial arts since childhood, Dan has a deep love and understanding of martial arts.
Dan said, “It is very meaningful to conduct martial arts classes at THIS, which is more in line with its education philosophy of combining Chinese and Western culture. As a famous Chinese traditional sport, Wushu has been transformed and inherited for thousands of years and can be considered a perfect fusion of the splendid culture of the Chinese nation and the wisdom of the Chinese people. In martial arts class, we started from its history, evolution and diverse types. We arranged our practice sessions with the martial arts rituals and virtues so that students could better understand the meaning of learning rituals before learning the art and meaning of the most symbolic hug fist salute.
Through the martial arts curriculum, THIS students are able to feel different degrees of change – being calm then full of energy, showing respect and understanding, growing stronger both mentally and physically. Also, they are allowed to experience for themselves the meaning of the saying: kung fu is honed with time.”
As an important component of the THIS PE program, the Chinese martial arts program, students are able to better understand the traditional Chinese culture, enrich their after-school life, and demonstrate the cultural confidence of the Chinese nation.
THIS is a platform for the students of returnees from overseas to receive an international education that combines Eastern and Western culture. And it is also dedicated to fostering international talents with Chinese roots.
In THIS martial arts program, every gesture and the strong sports atmosphere gradually influence the learning and life of THIS students, with its national standard instruction and its combination with the Chinese traditional culture. From THIS, generations of outstanding students are going to the broader global platform.
