Irvan Sutiono

Since its establishment in 2009, THIS has been making great strides in the field of international education. With its mission “to foster creative critical thinkers who have roots in China and are prepared to lead in the global community,” we are committed to combining the best of Chinese and Western education, nurturing student character development, and guiding them to make positive contributions to the world. As Principal Wenping Li says, “In our educational practice, we have always strived to create a place for students to develop independently by providing opportunities for their growth and to build their internal drive. Our hope is that they will find their passion, and follow the path that suits them with determination.”

Today, the school is delighted to see THIS graduates all over the world attending their dream universities and colleges with some already making an impact in their career fields.

Irvan Sutiono is one such outstanding alumni. From Indonesia, Irvan graduated from THIS in 2012.

He currently works in the financial technology (FinTech) industry in Thailand and is also the Outgoing Curator of the Bangkok Hub of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community. This January, he attended the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2023 (colloquially known as “Davos” Forum) as a global youth delegate.

It all started at THIS. THIS was my first gateway to an international journey that has brought me to places I would’ve never thought of — my first real international exposure of being with, living with, and learning from people of different cultures.

In 2010, the family decided to let Irvan and his sister go to China to study. Irvan and his family were fascinated by the school culture and learning atmosphere of THIS after comparing other schools and cities in China. For the first time, Irvan left his parents and the place where he grew up to attend THIS. Soon after, his sister, Evelyn, also a successful alumnus in her own right, transferred to THIS.  Evelyn graduated with honors in 2014 and attended the University of St Andrews in the UK with a year of Chinese Language at Tsinghua University. Upon her return to Indonesia, she worked as a R&D Scientist for Tissue Culture-based Biologics Research and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine at the University of Göttingen, Germany.

I think the most important point (of my THIS experience) is the fact that it was the first time that I experienced how to live independently. It really changed the way I looked at things, how I wanted to experience real social life, the way I wanted to lead. Life moving forward, not just on a personal level, but also on the professional and global level.”

Irvan particularly misses the loving family atmosphere of THIS – his most precious memories and what taught him to always accept things with enthusiasm and an open mind. “I was lucky to always be surrounded by patient teachers and warm and friendly students at THIS. Even though I was new to Beijing at the time, my classmates took me into their lives as if I were an old friend. The teachers’ care and the support of my classmates all made me feel deeply warm.”

Principal Wenping Li, who was Irvan’s homeroom teacher at the time, recalls that “Irvan was a kind and positive student who got on very well with his classmates. At THIS, the teachers will pay attention to the development of each student. The ELA teacher realized that Irvan saw his potential and got him to participate in the school’s speech activities to build up his skills and experience. In grade 12, Irvan gave an excellent performance of Hamlet’s soliloquy in front of the whole community and the teachers were amazed at how much he had grown and how much he had achieved.”

“When I first started, I was a bit nervous in class and didn’t know how to express myself well. But that soon changed. My teachers have always been very encouraging and accommodating, giving me the opportunity to speak and present. My classmates were also always kind to support me. With everyone’s encouragement, I quickly found my way to study.”

Not having English or Chinese a first language, Irvan had achieved the near-native proficiency and excellent grades by the time he graduated. At THIS, Irvan learned to be diligent, self-motivated, and curious. Through student clubs, activities, and performances, Irvan wanted to make the most of every opportunity at THIS. “In Indonesian culture, we also have the spirit of being hard working. However, my time at THIS has made me realize that I can be my own driving force and that I need to have the grit, perseverance and courage to make things happen. It’s essentially the idiom ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’.” The two-year study period is also his best interpretation of the Tsinghua spirit of “self-improvement”.

Irvan adds, “Don’t compare everything with others, but rather with yourself. Be the best version of yourself.”

In high school, the choice of curriculum and discussion topics at THIS have a high degree of freedom. When it comes to course selection and career plan, teachers fully respect students’ interests, academic strengths, and future plans. In the class, teachers give each student ample time to think and placed a great emphasis on thier independent development skills, which is Irvan’s deepest impression of the classes at THIS.

During his high school years, Irvan was passionate about many areas including biology, computer science, engineering, and hospitality. In addition to strengthening his academic knowledge at school, Irvan found an internship in a hotel with help from one of his classmates and spent his weekends putting himself in an actual work environment, constantly learning how to deal with a variety of situations. This invaluable experience confirmed and consolidated the direction he wanted to pursue at the university.

Global Responsibility

From THIS, Irvan chose the École hôtelière de Lausanne (now EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland) for his undergraduate studies. He then worked at a hotel brokerage firm in London before moving to Bangkok to focus in real estate investments responsible for the acquisition and development of hospitality real estate assets in the APAC and EMEA regions.

Not forgetting his inner interest in science and technology, Irvan now applies his talents, experiences, and core values that he learned at THIS in the field of FinTech. In the past four years, Irvan has been involved in the World Economic Forum’s youth initiative Global Shapers Community, a global network of more than 10,000 changemakers under 30 working together to address local, regional, and global challenges.

Within less than a year, he was appointed to be a part of the governance team in the Bangkok Hub, and within 1.5 years he was elected as the Curator (President), overseeing the collaboration of over 40 volunteers to drive social projects in Thailand across four impact areas: health, education, sustainability, and COVID-19. During COVID, the team created three COVID relief projects, raising US$95,000 and impacting over 15,000 lives.

In 2023, Irvan was one of two Shapers selected to represent Southeast Asia – and part of the larger #Davos50 delegation – at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. He also attended the Special Address by Mr.Liu He, previous Vice-Premier of the People’s Republic of China, at the Forum.

From THIS to the world, Irvan has broadened the boundaries of his abilities and has become an international leader with a global vision and responsibility. This is what THIS wants for all of our students.

Our graduates make us proud and their achievements give us our reputation. They are outstanding talents who can succeed abroad or at home; they are the inheritors and practitioners of the Tsinghua spirit. They are the youthful models we expect in education – they have light in their eyes, dreams in their hearts, and a path under their feet. May THIS graduates, past and future, continue to uphold such beauty, exert strength and energy, speak for China in the international arena and make positive contributions to the development of China and the world.
