On October 18th, THIS hosted its first Open Day in 2024-2025 academic year.  On this day, parents and students were invited to Tsinghua International School to learn more about the unique programs offered by THIS.

Over one hundred parents entered the campus, participating in lectures, campus tours, course experiences, and consultation sessions to experience the teaching atmosphere of THIS up close, and to gain an in-depth understanding of the curriculum, students’ daily life, school culture, and enrollment policies. The event was divided into two sessions, one for primary school and one for secondary school.

In the early morning, the admissions officers greet the arrival of parents.

Principal Zhu reviewed the school’s 15-year development history with vivid examples and engaging stories. Principal Zhu introduced the outstanding achievements of graduates admitted to world-renowned schools, as well as the accomplishments and honors students have achieved in academic competitions, sports competitions, club activities, volunteer teaching, and scientific research mentor programs.

Next, Mr. Scott Pare, the Academic Principal of THIS, gave a detailed explanation of the school’s teaching staff, teaching methods, and curriculum settings, which are of great concern to parents. Mr. Pare emphasized that THIS adopts an educational system where all courses are taught in English, and the school has a rigorous Mandarin program whereby students graduate being bilingual in both languages. The program focuses on inquiry-based and project-based learning, supporting and helping students to cultivate academic abilities while exploring their inner motivation and helping them find their academic interests and directions.

Subsequently, Ms. Bai Wenting, the Chinese Vice Principal and the Head of Chinese Department, gave a comprehensive interpretation of the school’s characteristics of “Rooted in China.” Principal Bai emphasized that Chinese is a required core course in THIS. The school deepens students’ Chinese cultural literacy by offering characteristic courses such as Chinese history and Eastern art, as well as organizing Chinese cultural exploration and practical activities, Chinese cultural theme activity days, etc.

Following that was a distinctive student sharing session, where Andrew Li, a 12th-grade student from the International Department, and Emily Zhang, an 11th-grade student, took the stage to fluently share their experiences in studying and participating in activities within THIS. Their stories included a variety of colorful club activities they joined from elementary school to high school, project-based learning in both Chinese and English, and the mentor-led research projects they are currently involved in. Their narratives and their ability to switch between bilingual languages at any time deeply captivated all the parents present, inspiring them greatly.

Curriculum Introduction Session of Secondary Division

During the secondary division introduction session, the Head of Secondary Ms. Weiky Liu emphasized the educational philosophy of THIS: centered on student interests, focusing on cultivating students’ independent thinking abilities, creativity, and scientific research abilities, while also paying attention to extracurricular activities such as laboratory classes, club activities, and cultural experiences, enabling students to gain not only rich knowledge and skills but also comprehensive growth and development. Ms. Sumita focused on introducing the rich curriculum of the middle school, allowing students to develop into 21st-century international talents with independent learning abilities, caring for others, and a sense of collective responsibility in a diversified learning and activity atmosphere.

The middle school offers a rich curriculum and implements a course selection system. There are a total of more than 50 elective courses available. Just within the science category, students can choose from subjects such as Astronomy and Cosmology, Evolution and Natural Selection, and Anatomy. In this diverse learning environment, students develop comprehensively into 21st-century international talents with independent learning abilities, care for others, and a sense of collective responsibility.

Ms. Weiky also introduced that THIS’s college counseling team provides one-on-one college counseling for students and provides strong and professional application advice based on each student’s learning and extracurricular activities. In addition, THIS also holds university admissions officer consultation meetings, parent lectures, student lectures, and other methods every year to provide students with comprehensive college application guidance, thereby motivating and encouraging them to pursue their dreams and goals.

In addition, the International Department offers a variety of colorful club activities. Each year, the club recruitment features a diverse range of options, providing students with abundant practical opportunities. With over 50 clubs available, there’s always one that will appeal to you!

Finally, parent representative Ms. Ellie Jin shared the unique features of THIS. She mentioned that THIS is a small and refined group, and the school relies on Tsinghua University to provide equal and high-quality educational resources and platforms for every student. At the same time, the school attaches great importance to cultivating students’ leadership, and children can participate in various clubs, scientific research, team-building, and other activities, where almost all interests can be carefully cultivated. In addition, she also highly praised the efficient work efficiency of THIS. Here, the connection between families and schools and the joint education of families and schools are particularly valued, and the school regularly organizes principal’s breakfast meetings, parent committees, mental and physical health, and other types of lectures for parents. Here, she felt the warmth and professionalism of THIS family, and also deepened her understanding and confidence in her child’s growth in the joint efforts with the school.

Curriculum Introduction Session of Secondary Division

The primary division introduction session was hosted by head of primary division Mrs. Rachel Rudisaile and Associate Head of Primary Ms. Helen Luo. The two leaders provided parents with a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to the primary school’s curriculum, student extracurricular activities, team building, emotional social learning, and the development of behavioral habits. Mrs. Rudisaile displayed the classrooms of each subject in the primary school through videos, meticulously showing parents the teaching characteristics of the primary school. Small-class teaching, responsive classrooms, tiered teaching; group learning and cooperation among students, teacher-student interaction, and tutoring all made the parents present feel the charm of the primary school curriculum and teaching in a three-dimensional way.

Ms. Wenting Bai also introduced the Chinese language curriculum of the primary school to parents. She said that our Chinese mother tongue class uses the same Ministry of Education-compiled Chinese language textbooks as public schools. At the same time, the school organizes a variety of Chinese subject activities every semester to ensure that students’ Chinese reaches the level of a mother tongue and implants the roots of Chinese culture in their hearts.

The highlight of this open day was the campus tour guided by the “student ambassadors,” where secondary and primary school students of THIS transformed into campus ambassadors and led parents through the campus.

Walking through the teaching buildings and campus, the little guides vividly and proudly introduced every classroom, every teacher, and every bit of beauty on campus to the parents. Parents were deeply touched by the sincerity and “professionalism” of the children, and the little guides tried their best to answer the parents’ questions.

During the campus tour, parents, led by the teachers, stopped by the warm and bright classrooms, unique class culture walls, and spacious modern gymnasiums, imagining the colorful learning and sports life of students after entering THIS. During the visit, parents understood and observed while carefully communicating and consulting with the leading teachers.

Subsequently, the parents from the primary school group were divided into two workshop groups: literacy and numeracy workshops. The two workshops were led by Ms. Kelsey Barnes and Ms. Lori Rogers, both of whom had prepared a wealth of teaching aids and educational content for the occasion. In the workshops, parents had an immersive experience of the daily classes in THIS’s primary school, gaining a more authentic understanding of the teaching methods and educational scenarios.

As noon approached, the campus open day event came to a successful conclusion! During this event, the school fully showcased to the parents the fruitful results of fifteen years of deep cultivation in education. We look forward to meeting you again in the near future in this campus full of wisdom and vitality to jointly write a new chapter in education!
