Program Background & Vision
SIGMA is an unparalleled initiative in the world of education. It brings together the Tsinghua International School’s vision and ethos founded in fostering creative, critical thinkers together with the pioneering mathematics and science programs of the world-renowned Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University. The program aims to nurture future leaders and global citizens with unmatched academic prowess, and innovative capabilities. Centered on the principles of "academic excellence, research orientation, and personalized development," the program benchmarks against top-tier high schools worldwide, offering a seamless and accelerated academic pathway bridging secondary and tertiary education.

Launched in April 2025 by Tsinghua International School (THIS) and Tsinghua's Qiuzhen College (QZC), the SIGMA (∑) Program is a pioneering initiative for future STEM leaders.
Our first Grade 7 SIGMA class has just wrapped up an unforgettable fall semester—a journey of exploration, collaboration, and growth for young minds passionate about science and math.
For these students, the past months have been a deep dive into inquiry-based and project-based learning. Guided by the "Academic Pyramid" model, their education goes beyond rote learning. Taught by mathematicians and scientists from Tsinghua University, classes ignite a genuine passion for discovery. From mastering core concepts to exploring cutting-edge courses tailored by Qiuzhen College, students are already cultivating the "scientist’s spirit" of curiosity and rigorous thinking.
"As their homeroom teacher, I’ve watched this vibrant class thrive. These kids are incredibly sharp—they shine in math and science, eagerly tackling challenges in class and competitions without fear. But what moves me most is how they’ve grown together. Our classroom culture is one of mutual support: they challenge each other academically while building real friendships. This semester, I’ve seen their teamwork and social confidence blossom alongside their grades. I can’t wait to see them continue growing into thoughtful, well-rounded future talents." — Ms. Gao, Grade 7 SIGMA Homeroom Teacher
At its core, the SIGMA Program is more than a bridge between top-tier secondary and higher education. It’s a space where young enthusiasts of math and science can thrive intellectually and personally—nurtured by a holistic educational philosophy that values character as much as intellect.
Welcome to Join Us for the New Academic Year!
Program Objectives
1 Academic Competence
Command of foundational mathematics and science courses, with completion of advanced AP courses by Grade 10 to attain pre-university academic proficiency.
Cultivation of independent problem-solving skills and interdisciplinary thinking through research-informed learning and scientific practice.
2 Global Competitiveness
Development of native-level fluency in academic English and Chinese.
Fostering a multicultural understanding, and leadership on international platforms.
Developing a distinctive competitive advantage by participating in top-tier academic competitions (e.g., Yau Science Awards, IPhO, ISEF.)
3 Innovation and Character
Fostering critical thinking and original research competencies, that embody the underlying spirit and principles of Tsinghua University Qiuzhen College and Tsinghua International School respectively:
- Truth, Exploration, Collaboration, Resilience
- Wellbeing, Innovation, Integrity, Respect, and Leadership
Promoting holistic development through THIS’ Humanities, Arts, and Sports courses, aligning with Tsinghua’s motto: "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment."
Pathways: 4+3 Progression System
"4" Phase (Grades 6–9):
Core Curriculum:
Accelerated Mathematics and Science: Completing 7-year secondary advanced Mathematics and Science, supplemented by QZC custom courses (e.g., Abstract Algebra, Topology Primer, Theoretical Physics).
Research Initiation: Micro-research projects (e.g., mathematical modeling, experimental physics) led by Tsinghua postdocs.
Holistic Approach: Proficient completion of THIS Humanities, Arts and Sports requirements
Milestone:
Eligibility to apply for Tsinghua’s "Yau Mathematical Sciences Leadership Program" in Grade 9, securing early admission to Tsinghua’s integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s-PhD track.
"3" Phase (Grades 10–12):
Dual Pathways:
Domestic Route: Together with THIS course requirements, students will focus on advanced university courses (e.g., Mathematical Analysis, Linear Algebra) from Tsinghua University Qiuzhen College for the possibility of special admission to Tsinghua or Peking Universities at the end of any of the high school years.
International Route: Together with THIS course requirements, students will focus on AP courses, preparation for advanced entrance exams (like the STEP exam to read Math at Cambridge), and Olympiad training, or lab research (like in the collaborative initiative between MIT’s RSI and Tsinghua), leading to tailored Ivy League applications.
Flexibility: Students may transfer to THIS’s regular track if needed, ensuring personalized growth.
Curriculum: Academic Pyramid Model
Pedagogy
PBL + Research: Learning will take place through project-based research (for e.g., "Carbon-Neutral City Modeling"), rooted in math modeling in Grade 6, leading to publishing papers in Grade 8, original independent research in early high school to publishing conference papers or in peer-reviewed journals by Grade 12.
Master Immersion: Learning will be deepened through regular lectures by Fields Medalists and academicians via QZC’s "Yau Lecture Series."
Faculty Excellence
Advisors: Prof. Shing-Tung Yau (Chief Advisor), Prof. Caucher Birkar (Fields Medalist, Math Advisor), Prof. Wang Yifang (Physics Advisor, CAS Academician).
Mathematics and Science Faculty: Tsinghua University Professors, Associate Professors and Postdocs
General Education: THIS faculty (71% hold master's degrees and above), 1:5 teacher-student ratio for tailored mentoring.
