Q: What kind of teaching model has the school adopted?
A: Our school has adopted a small class teaching model, which means there are approximately 10 to 20 students in each class. We will provide courses in Chinese and English tracks. The students can choose whether to go to the university in China or in universities overseas according to their own goals, and the school will provide educational support accordingly. The elementary school will adopt a bilingual teaching model. The middle school and high school will use English as principal language of instruction and also require the students’ Chinese to be on a native speaker's level. In this way we combine a Western education with Chinese traditions.
Q: What kind of textbooks does the school use?
A: For students whose mother language is not Chinese, we will use the textbook Learn Chinese with Me (Gen Wo Xue Han Yu) published by People's Education Press. After completing the course of study, students are expected to participate in the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) testing, which is organized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, to get a HSK certificate. Students whose mother language is not Chinese, but whose Chinese is at a high level of proficiency, will use Boya Chinese (Boya Han Yu), published by Beijing University Press. They will study along with students whose mother language is Chinese. After completing the course of study, students will participate in SAT Subject Test in Chinese and AP Chinese. For English textbooks, we will use the textbooks that Colombia University and other famous teacher schools recommend. These textbooks have been widely used in America and are appropriate for our students. For the AP courses in High School, we will use the textbooks recommended by Teacher College of Columbia University. We will also continuously update the learning materials according to the research of Teacher College. At the same time two famous American private schools, the Dalton School and the Bank Street School, will share teaching materials and teaching experience with Tsinghua International School. The Dalton School will also provide all of their daily updated E-materials and E-courseware to THIS.
Q: What kind of diploma do the students get and is it recognized both in China and overseas?
A: Our school will only recruit students with foreign passports, and they will get a diploma of Tsinghua High School upon graduation. This diploma is recognized both in China and overseas. The local students with Chinese passports in our school will be regarded as transient students in Tsinghua International School.
Q: Will international students have the opportunity to communicate with the local students in Tsinghua High School or even have the same classes?
A: The students in Tsinghua International School will use American textbooks and have separate classes from the local students. The campus is open and international students can communicate and intermingle with the local students freely in their spare time, or they can participate group activities or after class activities together with the local students.
Q: Do you offer other language classes?
A: For the moment we only offer English and Chinese courses, but we plan to offer Japanese, Korean, Spanish and French as second languages for the students according to their needs.
