Grade 2 Social Studies: Shelter Building Project


新学期开学的第一个周五,二年级白班的同学们迎来自己的第一个社会科学展示课——房屋搭建作品展示。在此次的社会科学单元课中,以“房屋搭建”为主题,采取项目式学习,二年级的同学们通过学习各种各样的来自全世界的房屋搭建样式,寻求灵感,来探索使用不同的材料和技巧来创造自己设计的房屋,在过程中获得知识,并提高动手能力、创造能力、团队协作能力等多项综合能力。


In this new semester, the second graders from 2W completed their Social Studies “Shelter” unit. Second graders explored the different physical environmental influences on shelter, what materials and techniques are used when building a shelter, and different shelters around the world. 


二年级的小同学们以小组为单位,与同伴进行合作来设计和制作房屋作品。特别的是,今年,二年级白班的同学们走出教室,来到了STEAM实验室中,在老师的带领下,同学们在这里获得了更多种类的制作材料和工具的选择,可以充分发挥自己天马行空的想象力,让自己的房屋更棒!想象,设计,创造,改进……同学们在小组中一起合作,创造出了形态各异的房屋作品,有“树屋”形状的,还有在火星上的呢!

The 2W students worked in collaborative groups to build their final projects. This year, they incorporated the resources of our STEAM lab accessing a variety of materials and tools to create shelters from their imagination from treehouse to shelters on Mars!  

 


经过在STEAM实验室中的两堂课的认真学习和动手实践,同学们在制作的过程中学会了如何合作:在出现意见分歧时,共同商讨出一个解决方案;在设计的过程中,小组共同决定应该添加或去掉哪些部分。最后,通过小组同学的通力合作,每个组都有了自己满意的作品!


The class really worked hard to plan, create, and improve their shelters. Through disagreements, compromise, and consensus, the students can be very proud of what their teams were able to create!

这次的房屋是为谁而设计的呢?这就要提到班级中的一个特殊成员:吉祥物“雪球”。“雪球”是二年级白班的吉祥物,其实是一个独角兽玩偶。在这个学年的开始,同学们通过投票选出了“雪球”这个名字送给吉祥物,在班级中它一直陪伴着大家,是班级中不可或缺的一员。这次的房屋搭建以“雪球”为对象,以它的体积和形状作为同学们设计的参照。


Who is the shelters built for? We have to mention the class mascot plush toy – Snowball. Snowball got its name from a class vote in the beginning of the year, and is with the class throughout the year. Since snowball was the perfect size and the students were all familiar with it, the class decided to use it as a frame of reference.

周五,二年级白班的房屋作品展览开始了!许多老师和其他班级的同学们都纷纷光临展览,认真聆听同学们对于设计思路的介绍,欣赏同学们的画作,老师们都惊叹于同学们的绘画和房屋设计作品,展览现场热闹非凡!

This past Friday, the 2W students hosted their Shelter Exhibition in their classroom. Many teachers and students from other classes came to see the project and listened to what 2W had learned. The audience was very happy to see all the paintings and shelters.  Good job, 2W!



在本次二年级的社会科学课中,同学们通过以“房屋搭建”为主题,在学习过程中综合运用多项能力,在团队作业中锻炼动手能力、思考能力、合作能力、沟通能力、倾听能力,在设计作品中充分发挥想象力、创造力。在完成社会科学课的项目时,团队合作精神是必不可少的,同时,培养同学们的“成长心态”也是教学设计中的核心。希望同学们在遇到问题时学会与团队沟通,不断改进方案,在问题中成长,在沟通中与他人建立良好的关系,从而更好的成长为社区中的一员。


Our second graders, in this Social Studies “Shelter” unit, sharpened their design, application, and cooperative learning skills.  They also showed their imagination and creativity.  Aligned with THIS Core Values, the students are developing their growth mindset through this social studies project learning how to reflect when making mistakes and coming up with solutions to problems. We hope that our students will continue to communicate well with team members to build positive relationships and to be productive members of our THIS community.
