THIS Primary is a joyful community of learners. We use project- and inquiry-based learning to promote engagement and understanding. This semester in grade 2, the second unit focus for Social Studies is clothing with three essential questions for students to explore:
1. How does clothing identify us?;
2. What is the function of clothing?; and
3. Where and what is our clothing made of?
As part of answering the first question, students learn about how different parts of the world have different clothing items and designs to represent their culture and identity. To take a deeper dive into our own country and identity in China, grade 2 decided to visit the Tsinghua Art Museum to interact with the unique Chinese clothing designs and items from history. This allowed students to make authentic connections between the clothing and Chinese culture and identity.

Imprint — Vintage Costume Jewelry of
the 20th Century

The first exhibition that the second graders visited was “Imprint –Vintage Costume Jewelry of the 20th Century“. Ms.Yingyan Zheng, the exhibition’s collector, personally led the tour and gave a vivid explanation to the children. The various types of brooches represented the changing times and art concepts of the 20th century. Although the children have not yet learned about the relevant historical periods, they certainly received this important history lesson through the appreciation of the exquisite styles.

Tsinghua Treasures – Selected Silk Embroidery

Textile Art originated from China’s unique resources and cultural background. The moment the children entered the exhibition hall, they were struck by the magnificence and splendor of the Chinese costumes. They were divided into small groups and started their “class tasks” during the visit, carefully copying the exhibits. Through drawing, the children learned that the weaving and embroidery, the fabric becomes not only a valuable material for clothing, but also a carrier of culture and art. The superb weaving technology is a reflection of national wisdom and the exquisite embroidery patterns are the embodiment of good wishes.

By visiting the Tsinghua University Art Museum, the children further enhanced their artistic perception and deepened their understanding of the world’s excellent cultural heritage. What a wonderful learning day for our second graders!
